Explanation
Okami has been released in 4 languages (English, German, French, and Japanese), on 7 different platforms. Known version differences are listed here:
PS2
- Release Dates:
- JP: 20 April 2006
- NA: 19 September 2006
- EU: 9 February 2007
- AU: 14 February 2007
- Original release. Developed by Clover Studios, owned by Capcom, which closed a few weeks after the North American release.
- Game language corresponds to disc region.
- Cutscenes can only be skipped in New Game+ playthroughs, and only if the same cutscene was watched in the preceding playthrough.
- Generally a poor choice for speedrunning due to long load times. Otherwise equivalent to the PS3 version.
Wii
- Release Dates:
- NA: 15 April 2008
- AU: 12 June 2008
- EU: 13 June 2008
- JP: 15 October 2009
- Port developed by Ready at Dawn.
- Some assets had to be re-created, and significant parts of the code reverse engineered and re-implemented due to insufficient assets provided by Capcom from the now-defunct Clover Studios.
- Relies on motion controls
- Added widescreen support.
- Strength of parchment filter reduced.
- Allows the player to skip cutscenes in New Game playthroughs.
- Prone to instability and crashing, likely due to reverse engineering.
- Generally a poor choice for speedrunning due to crashing issues and long load times.
- The control scheme differs between the North American and later releases?. In English, Tackle is bound to waggling the Wii-mote. In Japanese, it is bound to a button.
- This is especially relevant to the KT Glitch, which involves tackling frame-perfectly.
PS3
- Release Dates:
- NA: 30 October 2012
- PAL: 31 October 2012
- JP: 1 November 2012
- Port developed by Capcom and HexaDrive.
- Full HD remaster including widescreen, 1080p max resolution, and higher resolution textures.
- Had access to original assets during development, allowing this port to be much more stable than the Wii port.
- Only physically released in Japan. Digitally released in all regions.
- Adds optional support for PS Move motion controls.
- Adds various graphical settings.
- Adds Trophies to the game, creating the Top Dog category.
- Game language based on system language, which can be changed through system settings.
- Note that the PS3 is not region locked. A JP disc will work on any region console.
- Cutscene skips are reverted to PS2 behavior, where they can only be skipped in New Game+ playthroughs, and only if the same cutscene was watched in the preceding playthrough.
- Loading times are greatly reduced, almost always able to achieve minimum load times on disc or digital.
- This is the last version with the unpatched KT Glitch, 1 Frame Cutscene Skip, Veil of Mist Warp, and Acid Skip.
- This is the categorically best version for running NG+ categories.
PC
- Release Dates
- Worldwide: 12 December 2017
- JP: 13 December 2017
- Released concurrently with the PS4 and Xbox One versions, except in Japan where the PC version released over a week earlier.
- Released exclusively for Windows through Steam.
- Port based on the PS3 version developed by Buzz Co., Ltd. and Vingt et un Systems Corporation.
- Adds support for even higher resolutions, up to 4K.
- Supports Keyboard and Mouse controls natively, and controllers through the Steam API.
- When using controllers with the PC version, there is a glitch in the Steam API where the game will not recognize controller inputs for 1 frame when switching Action Layers/gameplay contexts (e.g. normal movement, in brush, fan menu, loading zones). This makes certain techniques more difficult or impossible while using controller. For example, it is impossible to set up the first-frame jump for Origin Warps using controller on PC. This also interferes with Brush Buffering for Fire Tablet Skip, as each Brush Buffer leaves an effective 1 frame gap in holding jump. To accommodate for this, players on PC must use keyboard/mouse inputs for certain techniques, or use software like DS4Windows to bind controller inputs to keyboard inputs, circumventing the Steam API.
- For more info, see Steam API Action Layer Glitch
- Keyboard control scheme can be remapped in-game. Controller control scheme can be remapped through the Steam API. Remapping is done on a context-by-context basis.
- Includes Steam Achievements equivalent to the Trophies included in the PS3 version.
- Game Language can be changed on the Steam Library settings for the game, regardless of the language purchased.
- Most systems can consistently achieve minimum load times, though PC's with slow hard disc drives may experience slower loads.
- Together with the PS4, Xbox One, and Switch versions, the aerial KT Glitch, 1 Frame Cutscene Skip, Veil of Mist Warp, and Acid Skip are patched.
- Cutscenes can be skipped in NG and NG+, but all cutscene skips require pressing the Skip button twice, as opposed to once like in the classic versions.
- Aside from the Steam API Action Layer Glitch, this version is perfect for NG categories, equivalent to the other 2017 versions.
- The ability to use Controller and Mouse+Keyboard simultaneously may even provide certain advantages.
